Photoshop Gets New Generative AI and Reference Image Features

Adobe has been at the forefront of more realistic AI image generation and the surrounding controversy, so we’ll be interviewing one of the key people at Adobe about AI and content credentials later. In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown of the main changes to Adobe software of relevance to photographers and videographers. This update integrates AI in a way that supports and amplifies human creativity, rather than replacing it.

And, since it’s Adobe Max-mas, the company has also announced a handful of extras for Illustrator and InDesign, too. Besides using Photoshop and Lightroom for editing pictures you’ve already taken, you may also want to consider using them for conceptualization. Lightroom’s automatic straightener is really useful, and I particularly like using Auto Contrast in Photoshop. There’s very little setting the two platforms apart in the way of basic adjustments, so I’m giving both of them a point. Lightroom has an automatic straightening tool, which I use quite often, and it usually delivers accurate results. The workflow is non-destructive, with Photoshop automatically creating a new Adjustment layer with a layer mask once you start painting.

Firefly differentiates itself from other AI art models by limiting its training data to stock photography and art that Adobe owns, with the goal being to make it safer for commercial use. Firefly Image 3 is the latest update to the model, promising “higher-quality images” with a greater focus on composition and lighting as well as better understanding of prompts. In a press briefing shared with Lifewire, Adobe announced a massive new update coming to Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, powered by the latest version of the company’s Firefly AI.

Adobe Express introduced a Dynamic Reflow Text tool, allowing you to easily resize your Express artboards—using the latest generative expand resize tool—and the text will dynamically flow to fit the space you’ve created. While it may not be perfect, it saves a lot of time initially on reformatting for a new space. Originally available only as part of the Photoshop beta, generative fill has since launched to the latest editions of Photoshop. To use the tool, you’ll need a subscription that includes Photoshop, like one of Adobe’s photography plans.

While generative AI images can be a controversial topic, there’s no doubt users can gain benefits by utilizing AI. False positives in content guideline warnings and inconsistent results often make simple tasks, like removing an object or extending an image, incredibly frustrating. One of the key features highlighted is the ability to use the “Find Distractions” option. This setting automatically detects and selects elements like wires or people, saving you the trouble of painstakingly selecting each area manually. For example, when removing people from a scene, the tool only selects them and leaves out other parts of the image, making the process far more efficient. This means Photoshop will decide whether it needs AI assistance to fill in the removed sections or handle it with the built-in algorithms.

This tool, now out of beta, simplifies fine-tuning with a single step, streamlining the editing process. With Firefly Text-to-Video, you can use text prompts, camera controls, and reference images to generate footage that fills gaps in your video timeline. Quick Actions in Lightroom for mobile and web claims to speed up your edits by automatically creating masks based on the subject matter of your photo. Quick Actions will then suggest contextual edits and relevant tools, so it suits editing on-the-go or any time you need to make precise edits away from your computer. The update with the latest Firefly Vector model is now available in public beta, and as Adobe continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with AI in design, we can expect even more innovative features and updates. It also gets new intuitive features like the Generate Image feature, powered by the new Firefly Image 3 Model.

The contextual toolbar will now display a text input where you can enter a prompt to guide the process. However, in this case, we want to simply expand the image based upon the original pixels selected – so we will leave this blank with no prompt whatsoever. The next generation of Adobe Creative Cloud programs is here, and it’s all about generative AI-powered editing. That’s a key distinction, as Photoshop’s existing AI-based removal tools require the editor to use a brush or selection tool to highlight the part of the image to remove. Despite the ownership responsibility being placed on users, Adobe says this new referencing tool is still “safe for commercial use” — one of the most notable advantages that Adobe claims Firefly has over rival generative AI models. Instead, users will need to either click on their profile picture on the Firefly website or do the same inside Adobe’s Creative Cloud desktop or web app. There, a user’s remaining number of generative credits is shown and it reloads in real-time. There is no indication inside any of Adobe’s apps that tells a user a tool requires a Generative Credit and there is also no note showing how many credits remain on an account.

The company’s latest Firefly Vector AI model is at the heart of these enhancements,promising to significantly accelerate creative workflows for graphic designers, fashion designers, interior designers or professional creatives. Adobe could improve the user experience dramatically by simply including the reason a generation gets flagged as a guideline violation. With this new tool, users can easily create selections with various opacities and different edge feathering, which Adobe says delivers a “more seamless and nuanced effect,” ideal for compositing and when applying filters or fills to an image. Adobe already added a suite of AI tools to Photoshop in April, including the ability to generate and edit images from text prompts — Adobe has updated this tool further in its latest iteration. But the update was instantly met with concerns over copyright — Mashable’s Cecily Mauran has a full report on these concerns. While Photoshop’s generative fill can be used to also remove objects, Adobe has since launched an AI-powered remove tool.

Adobe has released Photoshop 25.9, the latest version of the image-editing software. Included in the most recent Photoshop beta is a “Generate Similar” feature, which allows for slight tweaking of already generated AI images. Users can guide the output by entering a brief text description, with Photoshop automatically matching the lighting and perspective of the foreground objects in the content it generates. In Photoshop 25.9, they are joined by the ability to create entire images from scratch, in the shape of new text-to-image system Generate Image. The beta was released today alongside Photoshop 25.7, the new stable version of the software. A set of generated lamp variants are established within the Properties panel. With a selection established, click Generative Fill within the contextual toolbar. The Generative Layer retains both the given prompt and variants so that you can continue to make changes and adjustments as needed – even following this specific point in time.

Adobe said the video model is trained on public domain or licensed content that it has permission to use, and not on any Adobe customer content. The tool can generate a five-second clip for a single prompt and can interpret both text and image prompts, said Alexandru Costin, vice president of generative AI at Adobe.
